How to Become a Paid Keynote Speaker in 2023

Written by Jess Ekstrom

Are you curious about becoming a paid keynote speaker this year? If you’ve got a story to tell, then you’ve already got what it takes to step on stage and inspire an audience. The world needs more diverse speakers, and there is no better time than now to start your journey to becoming a paid speaker. Here are 3 tips on how to become a keynote speaker in 2023 and get paid to do it.

What Do You Want to Be Known For?

Before you start on the road of becoming a speaker, you’ll want to figure out what subject you want to speak on. Believe it or not, you don’t have to be an expert on anything to become a paid keynote speaker. Ask yourself what you’re passionate about, what people come to you for advice for, or what life-changing experiences you’ve had.

Still at a loss for what to speak about? Consider one of these hot speaking topics to guide you towards building out your talk. From entertaining speakers to motivational speakers to industry speakers, there are so many avenues you can choose from when becoming a paid public speaker. Once you’ve nailed down a niche, it’s time to get to work crafting your keynote.

Craft a Killer Message

Want to know the difference between free and paid speakers? Paid speakers provide their audiences with a transformation. As you begin to craft your keynote, think about how your audience may feel before they hear you speak, and how you want them to feel after hearing you speak. Your job as a speaker is to help the audience arrive at a transformation.

What do you want to be known for, and how can you provide value to someone else? The transformation you provide your audience is the starting point that will guide you through organizing your message. Once you get clear on the transformation you provide as a speaker, and the pitching and sales process will be so much easier.

Package & Pitch

Now that you’ve crafted your keynote, it’s time to package it and pitch it to event organizers. The truth is, you can’t become a paid keynote speaker if no one knows you’re a speaker. Create a speaker website that showcases photos of you on stage, testimonials from past gigs, and even a demo reel. Leverage your social media channels to promote your new speaker status by updating your LinkedIn title and Instagram bio.

Then, it’s time to start pitching to meeting planners via email to get booked and paid. Mic Drop Workshop is full of pitching methods, email templates, and worksheets to teach you exactly how to pitch yourself as a speaker.
