Public Speakers Sister Spotlight: Veronica Loving

Written by the Mic Drop Workshop Team

Meet Veronica Loving, who recently joined Mic Drop Workshop to inspire others with her powerful, personal story. Veronica speaks and writes about converting tragedy and trauma into triumph. She helps audiences find joy in living their truth and being their authentic selves. Read on to hear more about Veronica’s journey, her goals, her inspiration, and her sound advice for her 10-year old self.

What inspired you to pursue speaking and writing?

I was in a twenty-year marriage with four children, successful in my career. Living the “American Dream,” until tragedy and betrayal struck in my own family. My husband of twenty years raped my daughter and the family crumbled. My children and I’s journey to recovery was difficult. Writing a book and a play was a big part of our healing. We are now doing amazing and have actually learned from our experience. I’ve been asked to speak often and I really want to learn to give an effective keynote talk to inspire and encourage others.

Who is your main audience?

I’m hoping to transcend limitations and be able to speak to all audiences.

What is a struggle you’ve encountered as a thought leader and how did you overcome it?

I connected with what Jess spoke about when she said she presented with how she thought a speaker should look and speak, but it didn’t connect because it wasn’t authentic. I’ve done well in interviews and podcasts but I have yet to present authentically as a speaker. I am taking this course to overcome that.

What is one of your proudest accomplishments so far in your speaking or writing career?

I was nominated for a NAACP theatre award for my first play.

What is a goal are you currently working towards and how is it going?

I want to transition out of my 30 year nursing career to speaking full time. This is my beginning.

What is something you love about speaking or writing? Why?

I love that I can reach more people than on a one-on-one basis. I live for the moment when I see and feel a shift in perception by someone who has read or heard me speak. That moment you know you’ve helped someone feel heard and seen and they know they are not alone is the best feeling in the world. I love the perspective that Jess talks about when she says it’s not about you, it’s about the audience. Yes!

What tip do you have for people who want to write or speak?

I say go for it! Don’t look for validation, keep creating and finding ways to share your work and ideas.

What advice would you give your 10-year-old self?

Stop doubting yourself! Know your worth. Don’t play small to accommodate others. Be your full self and if your light is too bright for others don’t dim it. Tell them to put their sunglasses on!
