Elle Benson is a happiness researcher, author, and comedian on a mission to empower others to own their joy. Through her Novelty Labs, she explores how trying new things fosters vulnerability, growth, and connection. With two books published (and a third on the way), Elle blends science, humor, and 15 years of nonprofit leadership to inspire actionable change. Her work reminds us that happiness isn’t a destination—it’s a science we can all harness.
What inspired you to pursue public speaking?
After learning that happiness is a science, not a destination, I made it my mission to help you to own your joy. I have published two books (third in the works) and dedicate my awake hours to inspire others to BE HAPPY NOW. You can easily learn my tricks to harnessing your thoughts, behaviors and actions for optimal wellbeing. Every keynote evokes change in audience members for action. Data shows us that happiness is contagious, if we get 10% that translates into our homes, workplaces, and communities. As a nonprofit leader for 15 years, I know (and see) the impact that my message can make.
as a public speaker, Who is your main audience?
Corporate Employees, Women’s Groups, and Young Professionals
What is a struggle you’ve encountered as a thought leader and how did you overcome it?
As a happiness expert, the initial response appears that happiness is a bonus or even “cute.” Happiness is molecular and will determine our life expectancy; it’s a crisis in the country and affecting our economy, workplaces, homes and unless we tackle this science-based strategies the next generation health outcomes will continue to decrease. Yes, I use stories and humor in my presentations but the content is critical.
What is one of your proudest accomplishments so far in your public speaking career?
My first book, Cultivate Your Happiness Mama-to-be, is the ONLY book on the market that focuses on maternal mental health during pregnancy. Brain development starts in the womb and my minimizing stress for mother and baby, the health outcomes and resilience will be lifelong. I am proud to provide such a wonderful gift for new moms.
What is a speaking career goal are you currently working towards and how is it going?
I want everyone to know how to access happiness for themselves and how to create a culture of happiness at home and at work. To achieve this, I will speak to audiences ready for JOY.
What is something you love about speaking?
I love post-keynote when the line forms to ask questions and share their personal experiences. While I speak to thousands, I often hear that each person believes I wrote it just for them. I love that my message lands.
What tip do you have for people who want to write or speak?
Ask for feedback. Get uncomfortable being uncomfortable. We all started somewhere.
What advice would you give your 10-year-old self?
Think bigger. In kindergarten I wanted to be the first female president, overtime my goals got smaller. I believe expectations of what women can do hindered my ambition. I’m taking it back!
